Terraform

FindTools Guide 2026-08-31
Terraform is an open-source infrastructure as code tool created by HashiCorp that enables you to define and provision cloud infrastructure using a declarative configuration language called HCL. Instead of manually clicking through console dashboards or running individual commands, Terraform lets you describe your entire infrastructure in code files and apply those changes in a predictable, repeatable manner. It supports more than 2,000 providers including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, and many third-party services, making it one of the most versatile IaC platforms available. Key features include a state management system that tracks the current configuration of your resources, a dependency graph that determines the correct order for provisioning and modifying infrastructure, and plan mode which shows you exactly what changes will be made before they are applied. Terraform also supports modules for reusable infrastructure components, remote state storage for team collaboration, and destructive operation safeguards that prevent accidental deletion of resources. Terraform is designed for DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud architects, and development teams who need to manage infrastructure at scale. It is particularly valuable for organizations running multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments where consistency and reproducibility matter. Terraform itself is free and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. HashiCorp offers a paid product called Terraform Cloud and Terraform Enterprise that adds features like private provider registries, role-based access control, audit logging, and team collaboration tools. The free version is sufficient for most individual developers and small teams. Terraform is useful because it brings software engineering discipline to infrastructure management. It reduces human error, enables version control for your infrastructure, supports disaster recovery through reproducible deployments, and dramatically speeds up environment setup. By treating infrastructure the same way developers treat application code, teams can automate provisioning, maintain consistent environments across staging and production, and respond faster to changing business requirements without sacrificing reliability or control.
