Deno
Deno is a modern, secure runtime environment for JavaScript and TypeScript built on the V8 JavaScript engine and Rust. Created by Ryan Dahl, the original author of Node.js, Deno was designed from the ground up to address many of the architectural shortcomings and security concerns that have accumulated over Node.js's long history. Unlike Node.js, which relies heavily on a file system permissions model and an npm registry with packages that can pull in thousands of transitive dependencies, Deno takes a fundamentally different approach. By default, Deno runs with zero filesystem, network, or environment access unless the developer explicitly grants those permissions at runtime through command-line flags. This sandboxing approach makes it significantly easier to audit and control what your code can actually do, which is especially valuable in cloud-native environments and CI pipelines where security and predictability matter. Deno also ships with built-in tooling including a test runner, a code formatter, a linter, and a dependency management system that fetches modules directly from URLs. One of Deno's most distinctive features is its first-class TypeScript support out of the box. You can run TypeScript files without any compilation step, since Deno has native TypeScript parsing and compilation integrated into the runtime. This eliminates the need for build tooling like TypeScript compilers or bundlers during development and reduces the friction that teams face when trying to integrate TypeScript into a JavaScript codebase. Deno also handles dependency resolution in a transparent way by storing cached modules locally, making dependency tracking simpler than the nested node_modules structure that Node.js depends on. The platform is well-suited for developers building backend services, CLI tools, microservices, serverless functions, and edge computing workloads. It is particularly attractive to teams and organizations that prioritize security, simplicity, and modern developer ergonomics. Deno is free and open source software licensed under the MIT License. There is no paid tier for using Deno itself, although the company behind Deno, Deno Land Inc, offers a commercial hosting and deployment service called Deno Deploy, which provides a managed global edge network for deploying JavaScript and TypeScript applications close to end users. Deno Deploy does require a paid subscription for production use beyond free tier limits. What makes Deno matter in the broader development ecosystem is its role as a thoughtful and deliberate evolution of what a JavaScript and TypeScript runtime should look like in the mid 2020s. By prioritizing security by default, providing excellent developer experience with zero configuration for TypeScript, and eliminating many of the structural problems that plagued earlier JavaScript run
